Power of the Pen
Mission Statement
Because the ideas, dreams and beliefs of today's youth form the foundation of tomorrow's communities in Ohio, Power of the Pen is dedicated to helping young people find and develop a creative voice that is uniquely their own. It is a mission we will realize when we inspire every teacher and challenge every student to truly embrace the art of creative expression through writing as a life skill.
Our Commitment to Excellence
POP is committed to being the leading interscholastic program in written expression. Originally designed for writers at the 7th and 8th grade levels, POP:
» Delivers interscholastic tournament competitions for young writers throughout Ohio.
» Assists teachers in the ongoing task of facilitating better student writing by providing quality tools and resources to identify, challenge, and reward excellence.
» Provides teachers with an educational network that shares ideas and instructional materials to improve expressive writing skills.
The program's aim is to positively impact academic achievement overall. POP does so by providing in-class instructional aids that will serve more than 120,000 students in Ohio this year. More than 7,500 students will compete directly in a Power of the Pen tournament.

Club Description
We are a creative writing team that meets once a week to write on different prompts. The team typically competes in three levels of competition--district, regional, and state. This year, due to COVID-19, both the district and regional competitions will take place online. If possible, Power of the Pen will hold a state competition May 13-14 at Otterbein University; however, if it is not deemed safe to compete in person at that time, state competition will also be held online.
Activities Schedule
Do you LOVE writing stories? Are you creative? Can you work well in a limited time? Are you a 7th or 8th grader?
Power of the Pen might be just the right thing for you!!!
TRYOUTS will be held September 8-10 from 2:40-4:00 in Mrs. Hughes' room. Students just need to attend ONE day in order to try out for the team. They will be given a prompt and have 40 minutes to compose their stories, just as they will in competition. Six students will be chosen for each grade level (7th and 8th) to compete based upon the pieces they write in tryouts which will be evaluated by coaches in the same fashion as they would be evaluated in competition.
